Ah, the Fourth of July. The singing of the national anthem. The reading of the Declaration of Independence. The Old Navy flag shirts. The sweet smell of barbecued flesh mingling with the sulfur and potassium nitrate rolling in on the breeze. It just doesn't get better than that.
We gathered at my sister Lee Ann's house for the show. She lives at the top of a big hill that overlooks the valley below. We had a great view of every fireworks display between Puyallup [pew AL up] and Seattle, albeit on a much smaller scale. I was okay with that, though. At least there weren't any crowds. How I hate crowds!
Not to say that we didn't do our part to try to blow up the neighborhood. Do you know how long it took to light off all these fireworks?
Answer: a long damn time.
I've decided that the Whistling Pete needs to be outlawed. Could there be a more annoying and disappointing firework? Perhaps the bottle rocket. Those are totally pointless to me. I'm more of a Friendship Pagoda kind of girl. Or the "Fountain of Jewels" (no picture available). If it ain't sparkly or glittery, don't waste my time.
Speaking of sparkle, here's a shot of Rex and Eunice, who were enjoying a rare trip out of the house:
Aren't they cute?
And this very patriotic holiday was extra special for my brother-in-law Sylvere, who became a U.S. citizen earlier that week. (Country of origin: Haiti)
Oh, and I made a cherry pie:
Sing it with me! "She's my cherry pie...cool drink of water, such a sweet surprise...looks so good, brings a tear to your eye...sweet cherry pie..."
Happy Fourth of July, everyone!

I think I'll remember the Old Navy T-shirts most of all...
ah the fourth. such a wonderful holiday. especially when one has a metric assload of fireworks to shoot off (yes, i'm looking at you, rjo).
and i wholeheartedly concur on the pointlessness of the whistling pete. it's a nusiance. unless it's made to shriek and explode underwater. then it's amusing. but give me glitter and sparkle or give me death! (sorry to wax all patrick henry on you)
rex and eunice are cute as ever. and congrats to sylvere--that's fantastic.
Wowee Wow!! That cherry pie looks SO GOOD! You are invited to every 4th of July at my house forever! I want some of that pie!
I can't believe how many fireworks you all had. I bet that was quite a show.
I love seeing Rex and Eunice. They are indeed sparkly and cute.
Rad,
it was my mom's first 4th as a US citizen too and she bawled. So special! Give Sylvere our love. That's awsome! We got to drive through downtown Portland on our way home from Ev's sisters and they were having a big firworks show over the river...MAGICAL! The lights of the city, the river full of boats, the sparkle...I love fireworks. The bigger, the sparklier, the better!
I blew up the picture of that cherry pie... it looked so yummy! Happy 4th!
