Epic Fail

Threw away some rotten kale today. I woke up every morning and said to myself, "Today is the day I eat kale." But every time I opened up the fridge and looked at it, I gagged. So I made a batch of sugar cookies and ate 90% of them instead. They were tasty.

Re-purchasing kale tomorrow and forcing it down my throat, come hell or high water.

Puh-thetic.

Yes! Yes! To both!

So maybe it would help if you make vegetables you actually like. I still haven't found a way to make kale that I love. But I LOVE roasted broccoli or cauliflower or brussels sprouts.

Kudos to you, though, for even buying the kale! I have given up on eating healthy right now. Too many good things around (eg, Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Covered Peppermint Joe Joe's) Jason and I are going to jump on the resolution bandwagon and get back in the healthy living game come New Years.

You are on my calendar and I will post the recipe when I get it...

Peppermint Joe Joe's!!! I totally forgot about those!

Kelly--vegetables I like? Have you forgotten that my blog address is vegetablesarenasty.blogspot.com? I can choke down broccoli and asparagus when I have to, but I certainly don't enjoy them. I'm working on it, though.

Kellie--looking forward to it!

You must think I'm a freak because sometimes I CRAVE broccoli. Jason sure thinks I'm a freak.

I was raised on kale and I still think it is disgusting. Mangoes have very similar nutritional value to broccoli and taste a whole heck of a lot better. I don't think that you have to force yourself to eat things that you find revolting in order to be healthy.

Some of my friends are trying this green smoothie thing (there is a book called "The Green Smoothie Revolution" or something like that)to get their kids to eat more fruits and vegetables. It could be worth a shot.

And just FYI, they all said that any of the recipes from that cookbook involving kale were basically inedible. Best of luck in your quest for health!

Kale?!? Rand, why would you start with kale?? ugggh. I can't think of a single person I know who actually LIKES kale. And that includes all the veggie lovers I know. My brother almost named their baby boy Kale this summer. Terrible, eh? Lucky boy ended up as Austin instead, whew!

Two things. Try the green smoothie Rebekah was mentioning. It's what I do when I want to be healthy. And it actually works... buy a bag of fresh baby spinach (don't get regular spinach, because the bigger it gets, the more it TASTES like spinach. the baby stuff has less flavor.) So,actually the first step is to buy a banana, let it get a little brown (and sweet), then peel it, chop it, and put it in a freezer bag and freeze it. Then, next morning, get your trusty blender, chop up one apple, peel one orange, if you have a few frozen strawberries you can throw those in, add your frozen banana, and about 1/2 to 3/4 c filtered water (filtered -- to preserve your image of healthiness all around). Start blending. Once things start to get a bit smooth in there, add a great big handful or two of spinach -- about 2 cups, if you want to measure. Blend away, until it's all nice and smooth and greenish. If you can't stomach it at first, use apple juice instead of water to sweeten it up a bit. Or, add a quarter of a lemon, peel and all. It's not like a real smoothie, but it's a whole lot better than rotten, stinky kale! Call it breakfast, and nurse it along all morning long (it makes a lot). Good luck. Add sugar or yogurt if you have to.

The other thing... Kelly's right about the Joe Joes. Totally worth waiting for January, just to have some of those peppermint Joe Joes.

ps. you mentioned sugar cookies? mmmm.... My entire day yesterday included gingerbread for breakfast, peanut butter blossom cookies for lunch, oreo truffles for a mid-afternoon snack, a tiny bowl of ham and bean soup at dinner, followed by more of all three treats, plus some rice crispie treats and chocolate covered oreos that a friend brought over. Midnight snack of a couple more peanut butter cookies was a nice wrap-up! oh boy!! Tis the season. I'm documenting it here, and for the record, I'm getting back on track today... those three cookies I had for breakfast this a.m. are my last of the day. Promise. ;)

Did you get the recipe? And more importantly, did you try it? I have a good corn potato chowder that is excellent. Do you really hate ALL vegetables?? That is so sad. They are crying somewhere.
